Roosevelt Middle School’s After School Education Program

After School Education (ASE) at Roosevelt Middle School is a really big deal. The classes are FREE to all Roosevelt students and the program aims to get every student into at least one ASE class.

All students at Roosevelt are eligible and encouraged to apply for free ASE classes. The online application period recently ran from August 28 through September 2. ASE classes start the week of September 15 and run through early December. Each class is 60 to 90 minutes.

ASE is NOT a first-come, first-served program. Instead, the program is deliberate in its review of student applications and placement of students in ASE classes. The policy underlying

ASE is that every student who applies for an ASE class will be accepted and placed in at least one class.

The ASE classes offered in Fall 2025 include the following:

  • Performing Arts: Roosevelt Theatre Company, Show Choir, and Dance

  • Music: Rock Band, Advanced Rock Band, Jazz Band, and Guitar Club

  • Visual and Media Arts: Film Production and Arts & Crafts

  • STEM: Robotics, Garden, and Girls in Science

  • Athletics: Tennis

The ASE program is obviously about academic and personal enrichment for students. The program is also an innovation that helps Roosevelt families balance school and workweek schedules. Parents are generally hard pressed to pick up students at 3:10 p.m. each weekday.

ASE classes typically start between 3:20 and 3:30 p.m. and end between 4:20 and 4:30 p.m. On days when students have an ASE class, the pick-up time is extended toward the late afternoon and closer to the end of traditional workday hours.

The ASE program is 100% managed by volunteer parents and is 100% paid for by funds raised by the parent-led Roo Friends—a nonprofit foundation that raises money to expand Roosevelt student learning and well-being.

Please consider a gift to support our amazing and free ASE classes. Send your gifts to Roo Friends at 3366 Park Blvd., San Diego, CA 92103 or go to friendsofroosevelt.org/contribute.

Your gift will provide extra support to Roosevelt students.
