University Heights Community Association
The University Heights Community Association (UHCA) has been bringing neighbors together since 1984! As a member-supported 501(c)3 nonprofit, we’re all about making University Heights a great place to live by building connections and improving our community.
We organize fun events, publish a community newspaper to keep everyone in the loop, and host monthly meetings where neighbors can share ideas and stay informed. Cleanups help keep our neighborhood beautiful, volunteer opportunities bring people together, and a strong membership gives our community a louder voice. Our Zone Watch program also helps keep University Heights safe by strengthening communication between neighbors and local law enforcement.
UHCA is powered by memberships, generous donations, support from local businesses, merchandise sales, and grants from the city and county.
University Heights
Our Home
University Heights, a historic streetcar suburb of San Diego, is known for its charm, walkability, and strong sense of community. Bordered by Highway 163, Mission Valley, Texas Street, and Lincoln Street, it has grown from a well-kept secret into a lively destination. Visitors and residents enjoy its eclectic mix of cafés, restaurants, shops, and markets, along with art, music, theater, and special events. With excellent schools, parks, and local businesses, University Heights offers a welcoming, vibrant neighborhood full of character and community spirit.
Our History
One of San Diego’s oldest districts, University Heights has played a key role in the city’s history for over a century. Its name comes from an ambitious 1880s plan to establish a southern campus of USC, which never materialized. Instead, the State Normal School was built, later becoming San Diego State University before relocating east. The neighborhood’s unique character is also reflected in its mascot, the ostrich—a nod to the early 1900s Harvey Bentley Ostrich Farm, where visitors once rode these great birds. This rich and colorful history continues to shape the charm and identity of University Heights today.
University Heights Map
Where is University Heights? There are several answers, and all of them can be correct because the City of San Diego doesn’t have an “official” map of neighborhood boundaries. There are community planning documents, historical references, City Council district maps, SD Police beat maps, and even individual property deeds that all indicate slightly different boundaries.
UHCA has, for our voting and membership purposes, defined our boundaries in our by-laws as shown on this map.
We welcome and include all of our University Heights neighbors, whether “officially” within UHCA’s defined UH boundaries or not!
