Meals on Wheels: Delivering Kindness in UH
Who doesn’t love it when someone brings them food? It’s one of life’s simplest joys — a little reminder that you matter. That’s the spirit behind Meals on Wheels San Diego County, where volunteers deliver more than a meal. They also deliver kindness, conversation, and connection — one doorstep at a time.
Every year, the organization serves up more than 700,000 meals across San Diego County with help from 3,500 volunteers. But this isn’t just about dropping off food. It’s also about kindness as volunteers check in, brighten someone’s day, and sometimes even save lives by spotting emergencies or connecting seniors with care.
Here in University Heights, three of the people behind the mission are neighbors of ours, too.
Shoshana Kumin, the Volunteer Engagement Manager, recently moved into her cozy bungalow court cottage and loves it.
She’s often seen enjoying Pad Thai at Plumeria or relaxing at the summer concerts in the park with take-out from Bahn Thai.
Amie Brown, Chief External Affairs Officer, first lived in UH in 1997 and even witnessed the raising of our beloved UH sign. She left for a while but moved back in 2020 and is known for picnicking on Bahn Thai food before catching a show at the Diversionary Theatre.
Andrew Schacher, Chief Financial Officer, is known as a familiar face at TapRoom or Lancer’s — or for lending a hand to neighbors, like helping Dave get back on a new e-bike.
Meals on Wheels needs more volunteers! Routes can be done solo or with friends, weekly or monthly — some even start right here in UH. Learn more or sign up at meals-on-wheels.org or email Shoshana at skumin@meals-onwheels.org.
