February Update from the North Park Planning Committee

Hey neighbors! As your University Heights-elected representatives to the North Park Planning Committee (NPPC), we’re excited to share recent updates on our work advocating for our neighborhood.

In December, we were pleased that the city installed the stop signs and crosswalks at the intersection of Madison Avenue and Louisiana Street. This was an initiative that NPPC advocated for with the goal of improving safety and visibility for pedestrians and drivers as well as helping with traffic calming issues. NPPC is continuing to work to address other locations where neighbors have contacted us with traffic safety concerns. In January, we met with American Association of Retired Persons (AARP) to evaluate quick build safety improvements around the North Park Farmer’s Market. AARP is interested in being an engaged community partner for more work like this across the neighborhood. For help with street infrastructure and safety issues, feel free to reach out to publicfacilities@northparkplanning.org

Last fall, NPPC met with staff from the Metropolitan Transit System (MTS) Planning Department to discuss opportunities for transit improvement on the key bus lines serving University Heights and North Park as the MTS conducts its comprehensive operational analysis. In community surveys, residents have written in with ideas for how to make the buses faster, more frequent, and more reliable. We will continue to advocate for these service improvements going forward. Additionally, NPPC wrote a letter of support about initiating the outreach and design study process led by Vibrant Uptown for the San Diego Association of Governments (SANDAG) uptown streetcar project. These studies would solicit community input for the project via a series of town halls, which would be funded in part by parking meter revenues. This will hopefully enable the conversations necessary to bring streetcars back to UH before 2050.

Lastly, elections for NPPC are coming up this spring! Seven seats are open for election on the 15-person board to serve two-year terms. NPPC represents UH residents living on the east side of Park Boulevard. The deadline to register to vote online is March 5, 2026. Find out more via the QR code on our flyer.

Thank you for your trust and support. We appreciate your continued involvement as we work together to improve our community.

The NPPC is the City-recognized advisory group for land use, infrastructure, and street safety within the North Park Community Planning Area.
