Native Poppy and SDMA Wrap UH Sign in Petals for Art Alive Preview

In March, the San Diego Museum of Art brought a literal burst of life to University Heights, giving our neighborhood a breathtaking floral makeover. As part of their city-wide Petal Pop-Up series—a vibrant precursor to the upcoming Art Alive 2026—the museum partnered with the incredible local floral designers at Native Poppy to transform the heart of University Heights.

For a few magical days, the iconic cobblestone pillars of the University Heights sign were wrapped in a maximalist rainbow of blooms. It wasn’t just a few arrangements; it was a large-scale, immersive installation that was an explosion of color against the historic stone. In typical San Diego fashion, the weekend was perfectly sun-soaked, and the fragrance of the fresh flowers perfumed the air of Park Blvd. Seeing neighbors pause their morning coffee runs or bike rides to take in the site was a beautiful reminder of how public art—even the temporary kind—can shift the entire energy of a street corner.

The installation served as a sneak peek for the museum’s signature annual event, Art Alive. If you’ve never been, it is a spectacular sight where the museum’s permanent collection is reinterpreted through floral design. Imagine massive, intricate arrangements that mirror the composition of a painting or the curves of a sculpture, turning the galleries into a living, breathing garden.

This year’s Art Alive happened at Balboa Park April 23–26, just as this issue went to press. It is the one weekend a year where the fine art on the walls meets the ephemeral beauty of nature. Whether you’re an artist looking for a new palette of inspiration or just someone who appreciates a well-placed petal, it’s a must-see, so make sure to watch for 2027 dates soon and put it on your calendar for next year!
