Rare Society: A Distinguished Steakhouse in University Heights

Trust Restaurant Group’s Rare Society is a welcome addition to San Diego’s dining scene. Founded in 2019 by Chef Brad Wise, the steakhouse blends modern touches with the charm of classic steakhouse dining, inspired by Santa Maria–style grilling. Chef Wise’s passion for bold, smoky, wood-fired flavors is evident throughout the menu.

The space feels warm and refined, with bronze and gold accents that set the tone for a relaxed yet elevated experience. The hospitality is a standout— knowledgeable servers like Matt Buckley help guide guests through the menu with ease, adding a personal touch that makes the experience feel both polished and comfortable. The beverage program complements the food well, offering classic cocktails, signature drinks, and a thoughtfully curated mocktail selection.

The menu is extensive and designed to encourage exploration. Starters include dishes like the hamachi crudo, featuring yuzu, pineapple, aioli, and serrano peppers, as well as a classic shrimp cocktail seasoned with Old Bay and paired with a horseradish-forward cocktail sauce. Seafood lovers will appreciate the raw bar, while other starters and sides range from Caesar salad and lamb lollipops to comforting steakhouse staples such as whipped potatoes and mac and cheese.

A highlight for sharing is the Associate Board, a chef-selected assortment of cuts grilled over red oak. It features Snake River Farms wagyu tri-tip, wagyu Denver steak, and filet mignon, served alongside an impressive spread of house-made sauces and accompaniments, including steak sauce, béarnaise, Santa Maria–style salsa, steak butter, cipollini onions, and bone marrow. Desserts like the bananas foster cheesecake and brookie tart provide a rich, satisfying finish to the meal.

With its welcoming atmosphere, attentive service, and thoughtful menu, Rare Society offers a dining experience that feels special without being stuffy—an easy recommendation for both locals and visitors alike, and one we can be especially proud to call a University Heights gem!
