Native Plant Initiative: Fall Planting Season Brings New Growth to UH
Consider planting natives in your yard, porch, or balcony to support bees, butterflies, birds, and other amazing species that provide biodiversity. Fall and Winter are ideal planting seasons with cooler weather and natural rainfall providing a boost from Mother Nature. Cool-season planting allows roots to grow healthy and deep before the stress of a hot and dry summer. Local nurseries have many species in stock. Before selecting which species to plant, check out Calscape.org to see their requirements and to plan for their mature size as they grow.
Visit our Native Biodiversity Garden on Meade Avenue near Birney for inspiration. In November, our volunteer team planted 30 new plants, and the garden is filling in. Special thanks to Mariah, Emily, Justin, Kimberly, Josh, Debby, Dave, Andrea, Elena, Matt, Adam, Tyla, Monica, Monica’s niece and nephew, Pat, Roger, Dacil, Miranda, Dan, Maureen, Alice, Mike, Michelle, and Paul for their hard work. Join us at Park and Meade Avenues on any second Saturday of the month from 8 to 11 a.m. Our next event is on Saturday, Dec. 13. To be added to our email list, send a message to nativeplants@uhsd.org.
