Madison & Florida Intersection to Receive New Crosswalk Safety Upgrades

Last month we reported on Deepika Dabhi, a Forum on ZoneWatch 2.0 University Heights resident who was struck by a car at Madison and Florida while walking her dog. In a recent post on the UH Facebook Group, Deepika expressed her gratitude to the many neighbors who came to her aid, recalling that what got her through those first terrifying moments were the “beautiful, compassionate, selfless people.” “The incredible strangers-turned-lifesavers who stopped, called 911, stayed with me, and made sure I wasn’t alone—I don’t know all your names yet, but I hope you know what you did for me.”

Deepika is recovering, but it will be a long process due to multiple fractures and a concussion. As a result of this incident and UHCA’s request to the City of San Diego to review that intersection, new crosswalk stripes on all four legs will be added, and corresponding curbs will be painted red as required by AB413. Unfortunately, per the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices, a flashing crosswalk isn’t possible since the intersection is already a four-way stop.

Regardless, any improvements in pedestrian safety are positive and promising, and we will continue our advocacy for traffic measures that help make our neighborhood safer for all.

Deepika’s final plea to drivers? “Please just drive like human lives actually matter. It is not hard. It costs you nothing. I promise, wherever you’re going, it is not worth someone’s pain, trauma, or life.” A good reminder for us all.
