Lincoln Slope: Let’s Make a New Pocket Park a Reality

As reported in the November issue, a group of residents has been working to make sure that the open space where Lincoln Avenue would run between Georgia Street and the alley before Florida Street remains open. It’s known as the Lincoln Slope.

As this issue goes to press, the property owners that were petitioning the city to vacate the public right of way to allow that land to revert to private ownership have not followed up on their petition, and it is no longer being considered an active request by the city.

Neighbors Scott Mercado, Jessica Steinbach, and Jessica Jackson have spearheaded this effort, with Scott working on this space for nearly 20 years (check out the history at www.lincolnslope.com). The UHCA Beautification and Native Plant Initiative teams are helping them raise funds to purchase dirt, plants, mulch, and other supplies and helping to organize volunteers. The North Park Planning Committee has also supported this community-led effort.

Neighbors interested in keeping this open space beautiful are encouraged to donate at link.uhsd.org/lincolnslope-donate and sign up for the Lincoln Slope email list to stay updated and find out how to get more involved. Just send an email to lincoln-slope@uhsd.org to join.

With active community engagement, the ultimate goal of this open space becoming a true community pocket park—as it is described in the North Park Community Plan—can become a reality.
