Inside Liber8Fit: UH’s Welcoming, People-First Neighborhood Gym

Founded in May 2018, Liber8Fit Underground was born of a vision: to create a people-first approach to fitness.

Owner and San Diego native Angela Balisteri comes from a strong fitness background, having previously worked at a gym known for its hardpushing, “no excuses” mentality and the typical hyper-aggressive culture.

But she felt more was possible. One day, while picking up her son from Birney Elementary, she walked by the space she now calls home - and took a leap of faith to build a different kind of gym. Six months later, Liber8Fit opened its doors in University Heights.

Today, Liber8 is a thriving fitness community.

Led by a diverse, all-women team of trainers, the gym runs a steady schedule of 45-minute group functional fitness classes focused on building strength and conditioning. Sprinkled throughout the week are hybrid classes with an emphasis on mobility, various yoga offerings, and even the occasional sound healing.

But what truly makes Liber8 so special is the community.

Trainer and Physical Therapist Amanda Oliver puts it perfectly. “I first came to Liber8 as a client, simply looking to feel stronger. What I found was so much more—a supportive community, a passion for lifting, and a space where every small win is celebrated. The energy at Liber8 is different; it’s personal, empowering, and rooted in genuine connection. Over time, I not only got stronger physically but discovered a drive to help others do the same. That journey led me to become a trainer here, and now I have the privilege of coaching others through the same path that changed my life. Liber8 isn’t just a gym—it’s a family, and I’m proud to be a part of it.”

Angela’s mission has always been to create a space where people of all body types, ages, backgrounds and fitness levels could feel safe, welcome, and seen. But more than that- she treats members like family. She learns your name, listens to your share about your life, welcomes your kids to hang out, and greets you with a giant hug after you’ve been away for months. The connection of heart and spirit that vibes throughout Liber8 begins with Angela and is carried on by the members who show up day in and day out to sweat together.

Angela shares, “When these big things happen in our lives like having a baby or our parents passing away, this place is a center of support where people can come and let that go…that’s a very, very important part of what we do here.”

When asked what’s next for Liber8, her answer is deepening community connections. She partners with Active and Fit so members can access discounts through insurance. She offers special pricing for Winslow residents. And most recently, she’s launched Liber8Connect - a portal where members get discounts to local businesses that are run by fellow Liber8 members.

Member Alma Perez sums it up best. “It’s the best gym by far. You go for the workout but you stay for the community and the support.”
