June UHCA Meeting Recap: Membership, Events, and Big Wins
Zone Watch
Officer Tiffany Adamek covered safety tips for the summer, including fire prevention, locking doors and windows, and driving safely. The community was reminded to be cautious and aware of their surroundings, as crime can increase during busy periods. Upcoming events were announced, including a “Coffee with Cops” event on June 17th and participation in the San Diego Pride parade. Officer Adamek also discussed a glitch in the crime mapping system and emphasized the importance of calling 9-1-1 in emergencies.
UHCA Regular Meeting
Kristen Harms distributed postcards for community members to send to San Diego Unified School District trustees in support of the proposed plan for redevelopment of the Brucker Education Center and discussed plans to present signed posters at an upcoming developer meeting.
UHCA President Marc Johnson reported on UHCA’s increased membership and volunteer engagement, with UHCA Secretary Deborah Morrison requesting ideas for a fall membership drive. Financial improvements were noted, with the organization having turned around a previously concerning cash flow situation. Marc also noted that UH News has expanded to 16 pages and is generating more advertisers. This also creates more opportunities for community members to contribute stories. Deborah’s advocacy led to the Vermont Street bridge lights being temporarily fixed after media coverage. The organization’s social media presence has grown significantly, with 600 new followers in six months. Upcoming projects include utility box art installations by local artists, a website relaunch in July, and community surveys to gather input on future initiatives and investment priorities. UHCA has stepped up partnering with UHCDC to help secure sponsors for Concerts in the Park.
Originally from New York, I moved to San Diego in 2024 and now call the Winslow in University Heights home. Some of my favorite local spots include Good Omen, Bahn Thai, Clos, and Park & Rec—and I’m counting down the days until Marigold Bagels opens in North Park. I’m excited to help support and share all the great things happening in our neighborhood.
University Heights Planning, Zoning, and Land Use
Because surveys earlier this year indicated a strong desire for UHCA to provide more information about land use, board member (and Uptown Community Planning Group board member) Bill Ellig put together an extensive presentation on how San Diego land use and zoning regulations have evolved and how they apply to UH. The session was highly interactive with a lot of audience Q&A. Bill’s full presentation—video and slides—is available in the Meetings section at www.uhsd.org.
