Birney Elementary Launches Community Marketplace to Address Food Insecurity
As uncertainty around SNAP benefits continues to impact families nationwide, the University Heights community is taking action with a grassroots solution: a community marketplace at Birney Elementary School where neighbors can access what they need or share what they can.
The timing couldn’t be more critical. One in four San Diegans faces food insecurity—significantly higher than the national average of one in seven. In a city with one of the highest costs of living in the nation, even a single unanticipated expense or event can destabilize our neighbors’ finances and bring on perilous change.
“We’re piloting this as a way to support each other,” explained organizers. “It’s not just about food, it’s about building a network where our community can rely on one another.”
The marketplace operates on a simple premise: take what you need, leave what you can. No questions asked, no barriers to access. This is heavily inspired by Feeding San Diego’s initiatives and run by parent volunteers at Birney.
For those interested in donations: We’re currently only accepting non-perishables as the program takes off. We hope to be able to provide fresh food in the near future.
Drop-off times: Wednesday mornings before school
Marketplace hours: Fridays, 9 to 10 a.m. in Principal Rosa’s office
There is a delivery option available for those who cannot make it or need assistance. Anyone interested can request a delivery with the volunteers.
The initiative aims to provide ingredients to build complete meals while honoring the diversity of the UH community. Organizers are working to include items that reflect various cultural cuisines and accommodate different dietary preferences and needs.
Community members who wish to request items can submit suggestions either in the school office or through the suggestions box in the market. This ensures the marketplace evolves to meet communal needs and that the marketplace provides a dignified and inclusive space for all.
Anyone interested in helping run the marketplace can contact Principal Rosas directly at the school or reach out to one of the volunteers at the market on Wednesdays and Fridays.
A word from our volunteers: This marketplace represents the spirit of UH. We aim to create a space where neighbors support neighbors without barriers, stigma, or paperwork. We hope to create a comfortable and equitable space where everyone participates with pride—both as recipients and as volunteer-donors.
