April at the University Heights Library: Science, Poetry, Birding, and More

Spring is bursting out all over here at the University Heights Branch Library! Beginning with our Maker Monday Adult Craft Night on Monday, April 6, at 5 p.m., Bedazzled Journals, we will be bedazzling and collaging to our heart’s content. All attendees will receive a journal to personalize and take home.

The Fleet Science Center will present Under Pressure: Don’t Try This At Home! on Saturday, April 4, from 10 to 11 a.m., for K-6th grade. From balloons to vacuums, learn just how strong air can be through exciting and engaging demonstrations involving the physics of air. Join us for Science Made Magical, our Spring Into STEAM hands-on adventure on Monday, April 13, from 3 to 4 p.m. Young wizards will use safe, everyday materials to make glowing Wizard’s Lava Lamps and build colorful Kaleidoscopes of Light, discovering the magic behind science. Registration for youths aged 6-9 is required.

Did you know San Diego is one of the birdiest cities in the world? Learn about Migrating Birds in our special Birding 101 Workshop hosted by the San Diego Bird Alliance on Tuesday, April 14, at 6 p.m. If you are curious about nature, birding can be a great skill or hobby. This workshop is designed for complete beginners, novices, and experts alike. No binoculars are necessary. All ages are welcome. Let’s discover our nature neighbors around us!

San Diego Poet Laureate, Paolo Capó-García, will return on Tuesday, April 21, from 6 to 7:30 p.m. to celebrate National Poetry Month. She will do a reading of her work, followed by a Q&A. Refreshments will be provided. Come early to grab a seat.

Many thanks to our Friends of the UH Library. We continue to have Miss Jennifer Duncan’s weekly Pajama Storytime every Wednesday at 4:30 p.m. Also happening weekly is Let’s Play, Thursdays! Bring your kids to the library every Thursday morning at 10 a.m. for a variety of play: Storytime, crafts, dancing, songs, and most of all, FUN. Every third Thursday, Write Out Loud will be presenting a Kamishibai (Japanese paper theater) storytime.

Be on the lookout for our annual Patron Satisfaction Survey. This is a chance to give both the Library and City planners valuable feedback on how the Library is serving you and what you would like to see going forward. We also extend our deepest gratitude and appreciation to Ernestine “Ernie” Bonn for being a lifelong supporter of the University Heights Library – you will be missed!
