If you’ve walked down Madison Avenue recently, you’ve likely noticed the chartreuse storefront near Good Omen Coffee. The vibrant space is home to Whit at Home, the first brick-and-mortar location for interior designer Whit Solomon and her growing San Diego design studio.
For Whit, the idea behind the business has always been personal.
“I’ve always had a strong sense for the importance of feeling at home,” she said. “That feeling of comfort and peace in your space is powerful, and I wanted to help create that for other people.”
Whit launched the company four years ago after working in staging and vacation rental design. Today she leads a team of four designers working on projects across San Diego, from furnishing homes to full remodels.
“People sometimes think interior design is just picking throw pillows,” Whit said. But there are hundreds of decisions, budgeting, logistics, and coordination behind the scenes.”
At the center of Whit’s philosophy is designing spaces that reflect the homeowner—not the designer.
“My goal is to make it look like my clients designed the space, but with the help of a professional,” she said. “The best spaces reflect the homeowner’s personality and how they live.”
Opening a storefront felt like a natural next step as the company grew.
“We had simply outgrown our old office space,” Whit said. “I also wanted a place where we could host workshops, design clubs, and connect with the community.”
The location in University Heights felt especially meaningful. Whit lived in the neighborhood for years and often walked past the Madison Avenue storefront while it sat empty.
“I remember thinking, if this space ever becomes available, it’s mine,” Whit said.
Inside the shop, visitors will find home décor pieces curated by Whit and her team, and artwork from eight featured artists. One of Whit’s favorite pieces is a pair of sculptural crumpled wall sconces by a New York artist.
The store officially opened March 1, drawing hundreds of visitors.
“What surprised me most was how supportive and excited everyone was,” Whit said. “The University Heights community has been incredibly welcoming.”
Looking ahead, Whit hopes the shop becomes more than a design studio.
“Home should be a place where you can truly be yourself,” Whit said. “A place to rest, recharge, and feel comfortable so that you can go out in the world and be the best version of you.”
Now with its new storefront at 1733 Madison Avenue, Whit at Home aims to bring that feeling to both clients and neighbors alike. Discover more at www.whitathome.com or on social media @whitathome
