UH Off-Leash Dog Park Damaged Again After Car Crash
For the second time in under one year, the UH Off-Leash Dog Park was hit by a car, damaging the fence and forcing another closure. The accident happened in the morning on Friday February 7, thankfully nobody was using the park at the time so there were no injuries to people or pups.
The San Diego Parks & Recreation department was able to use materials on hand and had the fence repaired with the park being re-opened and functional as of Tuesday February 11. This is a significant improvement from the last time this happened in May when the park was closed for over two months. Kudos to the City for taking care of this so quickly!
The proximity of the dog park to the dangerous El Cajon / Park Boulevard intersection has raised many questions on social media about the safety of this dog park. Councilmember Whitburn’s office provided this statement to UH News:
“Incidents like these are an unfortunate reminder of the importance of prioritizing traffic safety within our neighborhoods. I’m glad to hear the Parks and Recreation Department quickly repaired the fence and is now exploring the feasibility of safety measures to help prevent future incidents.”
According to the Parks and Recreation Department, as Councilmember Whitburn indicated, they are exploring barriers like bollards pending a review of regulations.
