The Story of Two Trees: UH’s Canary Palm and Bunya Pine
On July 22, a loud thud was heard around North and Adams when the crown of a magnificent Canary Island Palm crashed down onto the street, a victim of an “evil weevil” infestation.
If you have Palms on your property, you are at high risk of infestation. Please consider taking steps to protect them. UC Riverside has a lot of information at biocontrol.ucr.edu/mark-hoddle.
UHCA, UHCDC and UHHS have worked with the City to protect several of the historic Canary Palms along Park Blvd., and they may well be the only ones in our neighborhood that survive. On a much happier note, the Bunya Bunya Pine tree that was severely pruned in December 2023 and saved through the heroic efforts of neighbors who sprang into action (see February 2024 UH News tinyurl.com/uhbunya) is showing signs of healthy regrowth.
The 120-year-old tree at the corner of Maryland and Meade is believed to have been planted from seed from the nursery of famed landscape architect Kate Sessions. The stories of these trees remind us to protect and cherish all of the trees that grace our neighborhood.
