Vermont Street Bridge Lights Restored After Months in the Dark

University Heights residents who walk across the Vermont Street pedestrian bridge at night know how unnerving it can be to cross in the dark without streetlights guiding the way. Since August 2024, multiple Get It Done tickets have been submitted to the city asking to get the lights working. I have been in communication with Randy Reyes in the mayor’s office and have exchanged numerous emails and calls with Christina Gaffney in Councilmember Whitburn’s office who has been advocating for us as well. Our Get It Done tickets were closed without any action taken. So, with the help of local resident DJ Feuerborn, we were able to get in touch with Abbie Black at Channel 8 News.

On Monday, June 2, around 10 residents and I gathered with Abbie who aired our concerns on the news that evening. On Tuesday, June 3, Penny Roland and I walked to the bridge where—lo and behold—the lights were on!

We are grateful to Channel 8, Abbie Black, and all who advocated on our behalf. This successful outcome shows why UHCA is such a critical piece of our wonderful community. If you are not already a member, please consider supporting your community by clicking on JOIN NOW at www.uhsd.org.
