Hi-Fi Arts Co. Brings Creative Space to UH
By the time you read this article, a new business will have (hopefully) opened near the intersection of Park Blvd. & Madison Ave. “Hi-Fi Arts Co.”, aims to be a community hub for creative endeavors – from stained glass to mosaics to painting to visual arts. The brainchild of two good friends, Michael Sherman and Zoe Bonderman, it is located in the spot formerly leased by Twiggs as an open mic/meeting place. This new business will have a bright, fresh look with murals painted by in-house resident artist (and tattooist), Chong Tramontana.
Sherman and Bonderman met 12 years ago when Sherman played guitar in a band on the Warped Tour, while Bonderman worked in music production. They became friends and Bonderman eventually moved from Colorado to San Diego to be Sherman’s roommate. About six years ago, they rented a house in University Heights and fell in love with the neighborhood. Through daily dog walks in the neighborhood, they discussed opening a business together in University Heights. Initially, their shared love of comic books had them thinking about that as an idea, but they nixed that idea and eventually settled on art. The type of store where people could hang out, browse through interesting and unique art supplies. They also envisioned a place where various artists could display their art for sale, as well as conduct different art workshops for members of the community. When they met with the landlord of their current location, it was kismet. The landlord wanted to rent the space out to a business that would involve the local community and the creative arts.
As they gear up for their opening, Sherman and Bonderman are focusing on obtaining high-quality, customized versions of art supplies that can be used to create various projects. Rather than just buying a mass-produced kit on Amazon, they want to offer their customers the ability to pick and choose the supplies that will allow them to create their own unique art. Sherman and Bonderman want to cater to the “discerning beginner” who wants to try out new things. They will also be selling unique artistic trinkets, as well as Zines (small, homemade, specialized magazines). When not hosting a workshop, there will be space for people to work on their own projects. Basically, they want their shop to be open to everyone who wants to come in and let their creative juices flow.
