Meet the New FOUHL Secretary, Abigail Bethea

We would like to start by introducing the new Secretary for the Friends of University Heights Library, Abigail Bethea! Abi first landed in San Diego in 2020, but then moved around to a couple different cities across the country before landing in University Heights about one year ago with her boyfriend (Nas), two dogs (Moose & Mogwai), and two cats (Olly & Rowan). She currently works remotely for The Oregon Clinic as their Executive Assistant. In her free time, she loves walking around the neighborhood and reading at Trolley Barn Park. She’s recently become addicted to Fantasy Romance books and simply cannot put them down. We are so excited to welcome Abi to our team!

Summer has been a thrilling time for the University Heights Library! From the Summer Reading kick-off in June with Book and a Ballerina, Pride Storytime with Friidae in July, and the upbeat tunes with Miss Marae in August, we are excited to keep up the awesome library programs in the coming months.

We are battling city-wide budget cuts, leading to the closure of University Heights Library on Sundays. However, we want to acknowledge Councilmember Stephen Whitburn, whose efforts made it possible for University Heights Library to be one of only 16 branches in the city to remain open on Mondays. Thank you for supporting your local library, Councilmember Whitburn!

In light of budget cuts, it is truly more important than ever to show your support for our small but mighty library! Our amazing library staff accomplishes a lot with the limited resources they have, but we want to give them more to work with. Priorities for this year include:

  • Re-subscribing to the book leasing program, which procures additional copies of new and popular books to make waitlists shorter

  • Adding storytime events, like our weekly time with Miss Jennifer

  • Locking in engaging events for next year’s Summer Reading Program

  • Adding family-oriented activities and events to our library offerings

If these programs sound appealing to you, or even if you are just feeling compelled to support your local library right now, please sign up to become a member of the Friends of University Heights Library or donate via this link. ALL membership fees and donations to your local Friends chapter go directly to UHL to spend on your favorite programs and offerings! It is no exaggeration to say we need your help now more than ever. Don’t wait! Become a member and/or donate now!
