February is Presidents’ Month
dedicated individuals who have served as presidents of the University Heights Community Association. Over the years, these leaders have volunteered their time, energy, and vision to strengthen our neighborhood and foster a sense of community. Each president has brought unique talents and perspectives, guiding the Association through times of growth, change, and challenge. Their leadership has supported neighborhood events, encouraged civic engagement, advocated for residents, and helped preserve the character and quality of life in UH. While their terms may have differed, they shared a common commitment to service and collaboration. The progress and spirit we enjoy today are built on their collective efforts. As we celebrate Presidents’ Month, we extend our sincere gratitude to all past UHCA presidents (and their teams) for their dedication and lasting contributions. Their leadership continues to inspire current and future volunteers to serve our community with pride.
Although I wasn’t able to reach every former president since our 1984 beginnings, without exception those I did speak with shared the same sentiment: The best part of serving was giving back to a community they love and getting to know their wonderful UH neighbors.
Nan McGraw was one of our founders and was instrumental in creating Old Trolley Barn Park. She is especially proud of working with the city to transform Park Boulevard into the vibrant business district we know today and of helping establish Zone Watch. Carol Neidenberg spearheaded UH’s 125-year anniversary celebration. Greg Sorini skillfully kept the UHCA “boat” on an even keel during his six years as president. In 1998, Maureen Markey and Mary Anne Stevens shared the role of president, and Maureen’s husband Peter Rose may be the only president who also served in all four officer roles. He was a part of UHCA when Old Trolley Barn Park was dedicated and the Vermont Street Bridge rebuild was completed. Marc Johnson in his first term carried us steadily through COVID, ushered in the dog park, and revitalized UH News, and now leads our current team as we’ve been growing and breaking previous records—fundraising, membership, events—and shepherding us into the modern age of technology.
If you share this same love for UH, please consider getting involved. There are many rewarding opportunities to serve. Let’s work together to continue to make UH the best neighborhood in San Diego!
