UH Artistic Revitalization
Local artists transform streets with vibrant utility box makeovers

The streets of University Heights are undergoing a colorful makeover, thanks to a new Beautification Team initiative that’s turning ordinary utility boxes into works of art. Local artists have been enlisted to paint the once drab and uninspiring boxes, transforming them into vibrant and eye-catching pieces of public art.
The project, spearheaded by Danny Llamas, the B Team Lead for UHCA, aims to not only enhance the aesthetic appeal of the neighborhood, but also to deter vandalism and graffiti. By turning the utility boxes into colorful and engaging pieces of art, the hope is that they will become a source of pride for the community and discourage any unwanted tagging.
Local artists have been hard at work in June, designing and painting the boxes with a variety of themes and styles. From abstract designs to nature-inspired scenes, each box is a unique reflection of the artist’s vision and creativity.
As more and more utility boxes are transformed into works of art, the streets of University Heights are sure to become a gallery of creativity and inspiration. Stay tuned to social media at @universityheights_sdcommunity for a map of all of the completed boxes!
UHCA thanks Hillcrest Ace and Dunn-Edwards for their generous contribution of paints and supplies, but that doesn’t cover all of the costs. If you’d like to contribute to the Beautification fund, visit http://www.uhsd.org/beautificationfund
