Growing Community Within Our Community

Meet the University Heights Women’s Walk Club

Community just hits different here in University Heights. Our neighborhood is beautiful, with green space and plenty of animals — especially dogs — but it’s the people who truly make it special. For local women, one of the best ways to connect within our community is by joining the University Heights Women’s Walk Club (UHWWC).

UHWWC is a women-centered group intended to be a welcoming space, inclusive of diverse experiences and perspectives. UHWWC is its own vibrant community within University Heights focused on fostering friendships, promoting wellness, and exploring our neighborhood through walks and social events. Follow us on Instagram at @UniversityHeightsWomensWalk, or email hello.uhww@gmail.com to join our WhatsApp chat and subgroups. Find more info about us online at www.UHWWC.org.

UHWWC doesn’t have any application, fees, or membership dues. We operate through a volunteer leadership team and established community guidelines. Some events have costs for food, tickets, or supplies, especially the ones we co-host with local coffee shops, restaurants, gyms, and art studios we love partnering with. But most of our walks are free, casual, and low pressure — that’s part of the point.

Come as you are, and participate to whatever degree feels comfortable. Some people have been known to show up to a meeting point simply to say hi before leaving. (I’m “some people.”) You can leave whenever you’d like; there’s no obligation to stay. While punctuality matters for a few of our meetups, plenty of events are drop-in friendly. Our craft club at Trolley Barn Park, for instance, is usually come-and-go: you can bring your own project and work on your own timeline.

UHWWC also makes it easy to meet people without the pressure of a big group. Every walk brings a mix of new and familiar faces, and while turnout can vary, our numbers keep growing. Members often tell us how nice it is to now recognize neighbors they met through the club. You don’t have to live in University Heights to join us though. We get members from all across San Diego, which makes us even better.

Through UHWWC, we’ve watched real friendships and even professional connections take root. If that sounds like your kind of community, we’d love to see you at an event soon.
