Peace One Day

International Peace Day is celebrated on Sept. 21 of each year. Roosevelt Middle School is an International Baccalaureate (IB) World School, just like Birney Elementary. IB Schools celebrate the United Nations’ International Day of Peace each year. Students at these schools unite to magnify peace. Roosevelt students, just like Birney Elementary students, created a human-scale peace symbol in the schoolyard. A drone flew overhead to capture a bird’s-eye view of the symbolic act to advance peace. IB curriculum incorporates the promotion of peace by inspiring student perspectives that consider how to build a better and more peaceful world.

To commemorate the annual Peace Day, each student received a school T-shirt with a graphic design that incorporated artwork by multiple students. Each year, students wear the new Peace Day T-shirt, and when students wear the T-shirt throughout the year, the idea for peace continues to spread.

This year’s UN theme is Invest in Peace: For Everyone, Everywhere, Every Day and celebrates ‘everyday architects of peace’ — people driving local action, laying the groundwork for stability, and building a lasting peace from the ground up.

Everyone, everywhere can do their part for peace. Take one small step for peace every day:

  • Give your time to help someone else.

  • Lend your voice to drive positive change.

  • Host a Peace Circle — an intergenerational youth-led conversation on solutions.

“On this International Day of Peace, let us all be inspired by the courage of those who champion peace in neighbourhoods, classrooms and communities. And let’s call on world leaders to invest in a peaceful future for all people.” — UN Secretary-General António Guterres
